FROM THE NEWS
We are deeply saddened by the tragic news regarding Lieutenant Colonel Salvatore Carpitano, an Italian pilot based in Arizona. A devoted father, husband, and military aviator, Lieutenant Colonel Carpitano lost his life in a traffic collision while returning home from work near Luke Air Force Base.
Born in Sicily, he served with distinction as a pilot and instructor and was assigned to Luke Air Force Base as part of the Italian Air Force’s representation mission in the United States. At the time of his passing, he was serving as an instructor pilot with the Italian Air Force Representation Office (RAMI).
His dedication, professionalism, and service will be remembered with great respect. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time. We stand close to them in mourning his loss.
For those who don’t know, Arizona has been supplying Italy with some of the world’s finest wheat for many years, helping to produce the best Italian pasta. Thanks to its hot, dry climate, Arizona grows some of the highest-quality durum wheat on Earth. So, the next time you enjoy a plate of Italian pasta, take a moment to think of the beautiful fields of Arizona where its journey begins.
The Story Behind the “Flags on Saguaro” Art
Over 20 years ago, designer Antonio Larosa, who studied and trained as an architect in Italy, developed a passion for traveling around Arizona and taking photographs of cacti, especially saguaros.
One day, he began adding painstakingly flags to the images he captured. It was love at first sight. What started as a fun, creative experiment quickly grew into something much bigger. People began requesting the designs for catalogs and websites, and even large American organizations (such as the National Italian American Foundation) asked Antonio to feature his unique and imaginative artwork.
More recently, thanks to their originality, the designs have been featured on various Amazon products, including bags, water bottles, and phone accessories. The project originally began under the brand name Ciao Arizona and later evolved into Hello Arizona as well.
And of course, in more than 20 years of creating the “Flags on Saguaros” art, no saguaros were harmed in the process.
Well… now you know!

The Italian Air Force is setting up a new operational conversion unit (OCU) within the 156° Gruppo (Squadron) to train its pilots to fly the F-35 Lightning II (also known as Panther). Due to Italy's limited space for such training, the F-35 OCU will be located at the US Air Force’s Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, Arizona. This decision offers a great opportunity to a better relationship between the USA and Italy.
